About this artwork
With this piece, I explore the barrier between practicality and art. It is such a fun conversation to have!
This work is, for all intensive purposes, a functional shelf, with working screwdrivers. These have been painted, and assembled in such a way that make using them for practical purposes somewhat difficult but not so hard that people wouldn't be tempted.
I love the idea of someone owning this piece and having it up in their house and using… it to put drinks on!
It is clearly not simply "design" as it bears the weight of the entire philosophy that underpins m works with balance and colour. This includes the purposeful "handmade" look.
This also is made from found and upcycled materials. The wood for the joins was cut and shaped by me from pieces I found on the street. The screwdrivers were found in the tip and the shelf itself is leftover from my home renovation.
This interplay of colour, form, practicality and impracticality is a joy to share.
