This is a 21st century African take on the Greek myth of Narcissus. In this rendition, the stream Narcissus views his reflection in is replaced by the smart phone. The youth realises and enjoys his reckless beauty with untamed self obsession that he shares with the global viewer. A private intimate moment in the bathroom is thus peered on by the global audience through social media.
This is a bold work that unashmedly explores the African male's… presentation of beauty against current standards and fetishism of black male bodies in the media. It was painstakingly done with biros on paper, using hundreds of pen strokes layered carefully to recreate the sensation of carefree sensuality evoked by the subject.
It appeals to collectors who enjoy the bold emotional contexts of the black, male form in a manner not commonly depicted by the mass media.
