About this artwork
“Retina of the Map” is a conceptual work rich in symbols and associations, inviting the viewer to explore the connections between space, memory, and perception. The painting intertwines map motifs with the idea of the retina — a metaphor for vision and seeing — revealing how a person perceives their surroundings, territory, and their place in the world. The interweaving of lines, shapes, and structures creates a complex visual network resembling… geographical contours as well as biological or even informational connections.
The artwork encourages reflection on the human relationship with space, memory, and the transmission of information, leaving room for individual interpretation and personal discovery.
Egidijus Dapsas, a Kaunas Art School graduate, majored in artistic leather and has background in blacksmithing and mural painting. His art is expressive, using abstraction, figuration, and vibrant colors paired with a variety of textures and forms, achieved through layering of paint. In exploring the fragility of existence and the tension between chaos and harmony, he strives to evoke a spectrum of feelings, reflections of the viewer's own world.
