About this artwork
The “Head” painting is contemporary "memento mori" art. The artist works in the space between life and death using rose petals that are not alive, but not given back to nature yet, a kind of flower’s ghosts. Developing the topic of eternal life dreaming Elen Alien refers to vanitas paintings from the past with the skull symbolizing death, but with symbols of luxurious lifestyle replaced with the garbage material – faded flowers and reused cardboard…
to show that true values are replaced by the fake ones in our heads. She is making a homage to the neo-romantic ideas of Novalis’s poetry through this gesture. She also refers to the “arte povera” movement, promoting the notion of revolutionary art, free of convention, the power of structure, and the marketplace as if it is possible nowadays when the power of the market has become even stronger.
