This work is a part of a deeply personal series created using a mix of printmaking techniques , primarily carborundum and glue.
This artwork explores the complexity of human emotion through texture and material. Created using sand and glue, the piece invites the viewer to engage not only visually but also through its tactile depth. The roughness of the sand contrasts with the fluidity of the composition, symbolizing the layered and sometimes conflicting… nature of our feelings. The use of unconventional materials adds a raw, grounded quality, emphasizing the emotional weight embedded in the work.
Rather than illustrating a specific narrative, I wanted this piece to be a space where emotions could breathe — for me during the process of making.
Elen Arakelyan, a passionate painter, printmaker, and digital artist graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia, masterfully unites traditional techniques like linocut, etching, and book illustration with playful experiments in mixed media—blending sand, acrylics, and oils on canvas. Her abstract prints and illustrations embrace the tactile richness of monotype, etching, and carborundum, pushing boundaries to evoke spontaneity and depth. Through her intimate exploration of memory and fleeting moments, her artwork resonates with a quiet honesty, stirring nostalgia and introspection in those who experience it.
