About this artwork
What the Pines Remember is a deeply textured abstract work that hovers at the boundary between landscape and pure sensation. A luminous field of dusty rose and aged mauve occupies the canvas centre, built up in granular, mineral layers that catch and scatter light across their uneven surface. Vertical gold streaks descend through this field like shafts of late sunlight filtering through a canopy, warm and directional against the cooler surrounding… tones.
The edges tell a different story: deep olive and forest green darken the lower corners and margins, anchoring the composition in something organic and earthbound. To the left, crimson and burgundy bleed through the mauve ground - remnants of colour, or of heat. In the lower right, deep violet gathers like shadow at the base of trees.
The surface itself is the painting's primary voice - granular, weathered, alive with micro-texture that rewards close inspection as much as distance.
Elena Shcherbina is a self-taught painter who masterfully weaves mixed media - resin, glass, pigments, minerals, paper, and acrylics - into her deeply reflective works. She builds textured, layered abstractions through techniques such as sculptural relief, translucent washes, capillary lines, and reflective surfaces, allowing her art to shift with changing light and the viewer’s perspective. Elena’s style is atmospheric and tactile, constantly evolving, and her palette of emotive blues, greens, and metallics evokes the inner landscapes of memory and stillness. Her paintings are invitations to calm, meditative contemplation - a space where silence and presence resonate deeply.
