About this artwork
In this historical landscape of the Andalusian city of Córdoba, composition fuses with meaning in the design of repeating horseshoe arches that express the terracotta and cream arches of the Great Mosque, testament to the Islamic glory of ninth-century Córdoba. Inside the arches of the painting appear three great medieval sages of the city, top left, the Jewish philosopher Maimonides, top right, the famous surgeon and scientist al-Zahrawi, and bottom… right, the Muslim philosopher Averroes. The city’s reputation as a bullfighting centre and its world-renowned Spanish riding school founded in the sixteenth century are evoked in the centre and lower left arches.
Elizabeth Drayson, a painter with a scholarly background in medieval Spanish culture and a Diploma in Oil Painting, works in oil and mixed media to intertwine the visual and written histories of Europe and Spain. She draws from both medieval traditions and modern abstraction, using bold colors, dramatic compositions, metallic spray paint, collage, and evocative textures to reinterpret historical portraits and landscapes. Her art seeks to uncover the essential nature of people and places, conveying a rich tapestry of intertwined identities and powerful aspirations for reconciliation, respect, and understanding through history brought vibrantly into the present.
