About this artwork
This painting is the centrepiece of the series and depicts the multicultural history of the city and province of Granada, Spain’s most important location in cultural and historical terms. Inspired by a medieval Greek fresco painting of the life of St Nicholas described in a series of rectangular scenes that surround a larger central rectangle, this is a narrative landscape of Granada’s history and significance.
It is painted in metallic acrylic… paint in gold, bronze and silver, and oils in black, red, gold, grey, sienna, blue and green. Red is a key colour here that reflects the fruit of the pomegranate, which is the meaning of the word ‘granada’ in Spanish; it also reflects the frequently violent and conflicted history of the place, as well as being the dynastic colour of its Islamic rulers, the Nasrids.
