About this artwork
This painting was inspired by working at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, where Ellen sees amazing parchment manuscripts of all kinds and ages. It got her thinking about the hundreds of people that have handled them over the years, and how we all leave a part of ourselves whenever we touch an object. All the manuscripts she sees have a material history, and there is a beauty in knowing that so many people have lived and left something behind…
in the form of paper, parchment, or a book.
The red figure in the centre is reminiscent of Bosch and the wonderful medieval characters in the manuscripts Ellen handles in the Bodleian. The blue reminds one of beautiful Persian maps. Just being surrounded by beautiful material influenced Ellen so that she painted this without planning it: it was not conscious.The painting contains many layers of very textured acrylic and oil paint which gives a true materiality to the work.The painting can be framed, or hung directly on the wall.

Ellen Hausner's works of art are explorations of the ephemeral and unseen. The sense of sacred permeates her pieces, as she delves into the themes of transformation, transmutation, and evolution. Moving between abstraction and the figurative, a meditative state of mind is of the utmost importance and acts as a starting point for Hausner's artistic process. She paints with India ink, acrylics, oils, and watercolors on paper and canvas, using traditional techniques as a base for each piece.
