About this artwork
This painting was not copied from an actual landscape. All of Ellen’s recent work emerges from her own imagination, and this is no exception. This painting has many layers of textured abstract acrylic painting underneath, and the landscape found its way to the surface. It is a dark painting in both mood and colour, but it is not negative: it is a painting which aims at exploring the inner depths of consciousness.
The title refers to the 'Primal… Matter' in the alchemical tradition: the first material which needs to be purified and worked with in order to finally come to full wisdom, known as the Philosopher's Stone.

Ellen Hausner's works of art are explorations of the ephemeral and unseen. The sense of sacred permeates her pieces, as she delves into the themes of transformation, transmutation, and evolution. Moving between abstraction and the figurative, a meditative state of mind is of the utmost importance and acts as a starting point for Hausner's artistic process. She paints with India ink, acrylics, oils, and watercolors on paper and canvas, using traditional techniques as a base for each piece.
