About this artwork
"Urban minimalism“ was initially inspired by the empty streets around where I live in Brynmill, Swansea. Emma wanted to capture this temporary calm in paint.
The “rules” for composition and painting No cars No People Bright light. There must be shadows – at diagonals if possible. Simplified forms – there must be little detail in the final painting. Emma wanted to explore the interplay of the geometry of shadows and man-made structures.
READY TO… HANG - Edges of the canvas are painted so the Art is ready to hang without a frame if required.

« My work focuses on light and colour. I use vibrant but naturalistic colour to bring attention to the extraordinary beauty of both landscapes and everyday scenes. »
Emma Cownie is a talented British artist whose works have featured in exhibitions and publications across the UK. Always seeking to achieve a strong visual impact, she composes works marked by bold blocks of colour and an expressive palette that is widely used in modern art and pop art. Influenced by great American realists like Edward Hopper, Cownie paints the quiet, the spacious and the still.
