About this artwork
Eric tried to get to know certain members of his family that he never met by making their portrait based on old photographs he found with partly readable captions in a family album. Oncle Paul was supposed to be in a grave in "Père-Lachaise" in Paris. He looked rather sad, but Eric made him look just a little bit happier in the charcoal he made from him. Somehow oncle Paul looked rather French, maybe because of that caption in the album? This is…
what Eric likes to call "the second generation" of the original charcoal: a new version with red chalk on chamois. Eric finished it the digital way and printed a series himself on Archival Matte art paper:

Eric Ezendam is a multi-disciplinary Dutch artist based in France, who has exhibited his work in the US, Netherlands, France and Belgium. Composing digital drawings and large charcoal works on paper, he combines classic techniques with contemporary conceptions to propose an intriguing style of portraiture. His representations of writers and everyday people feature a range of interesting postures, colour combinations and perspectives that play on the old and new, the weathered and the beautiful.
