About this artwork
For “Meta-sa”, I took the myth of Medusa as a starting point, where the gaze turns the viewer to stone. I was interested in how this idea could live on in the context of social media today, where “stoning” is no longer physical, but rather a mental state – a moment when we are stuck in front of screens, both under the gaze and constantly being watched.
Medusa’s eyes are made of reflective material, so the viewer does not see a clear image there,… but a distorted reflection of themselves.
The eyes of “Meta-sa” reflect responsibility back to the viewer. They do not just allow blame to be directed outward, but force us to notice that we ourselves are part of this system. We observe, share and expose ourselves, and it is in this movement that a new rigidity arises – not forced from the outside, but growing from our own participation.

Erika Aasa is an Estonian painter, printmaker, sculptor, and conceptual artist who graduated from Pallas University of Applied Sciences in 2024. She masterfully blends the immediacy of expressionism, the mystery of symbolism, and the subconscious flow of surrealism, using layered techniques to delve into psychological and emotional processes. Her works radiate a deep sense of introspection, inviting viewers to reflect on resilience, adaptation, and the power of living in the present moment.
