About this artwork
Pope Julius II commissioned Raphael to create cartoons for the weaving of carpets. He wanted to justify his role as a representative of the Church. In the original, Jesus hands the key to Peter. Behind him are the disciples. I decided to completely reinterpret the symbolism of the image by depicting Jesus as a shepherd (protector of the people). I also changed Jesus's facial expression, parts of the landscape, and chose different color harmonies.… With this painting, I intended to rekindle my passion for Renaissance painting, and through these changes, I was able to express my own interpretation.
Ernst Wieltschnig is a painter and draftsman who, after a scientific career, discovered his passion for classical and modern painting. He masters techniques from the Renaissance to Impressionism and today employs abstract expressionism with artist-grade pigments, acrylic binders, charcoal, and pastels. With sensitive color harmony and spontaneous composition, he breaks free from figurative constraints, capturing the moment of immediate expression. His works convey a great emotional intensity and invite the viewer to fully surrender to the perception of color and form.
