About this artwork
Pope Julius II commissioned Raphael to create cartoons for the weaving of carpets. He wanted to justify his role as a representative of the Church. In the original, Jesus hands the key to Peter. Behind him are the disciples. I decided to completely reinterpret the symbolism of the image by depicting Jesus as a shepherd (protector of the people). I also changed Jesus's facial expression, parts of the landscape, and chose different color harmonies.…
With this painting, I intended to rekindle my passion for Renaissance painting, and through these changes, I was able to express my own interpretation.
