About this artwork
In "The Red Queen", the familiar tyrant of "Alice in Wonderland" becomes something more complicated than a villain. Crowned in gold, surrounded by hearts, and dressed in theatrical splendor, she commands attention, yet her expression suggests a woman caught somewhere between arrogance and insecurity. Her oversized head and delicate features exaggerate the absurdity of power, while the relentless red creates a world consumed by passion, vanity, and… control. There is something both ridiculous and unsettling about her authority. Through this reinterpretation, I am interested in what happens when the masks we wear become inseparable from who we believe ourselves to be.
Evelyn Sutton is a Brazilian-American oil painter who draws on her decades of experience in graphic design and a rich heritage rooted in color, nature, and faith. She masterfully blends realism with contemporary symbolism, layering luminous glazes and using strong contrasts of light, shadow, and minimalist backgrounds for a timeless yet modern effect. Her evocative artworks channel beauty, resilience, and spiritual hope, inviting viewers into a contemplative connection with the divine and uplifting the soul.
