About this artwork
On one hot June day, a beautiful Ethiopian girl was playing in my studio with a sparkling glass prism, watching objects refracted in the room and outside the window.. and at some point she let a rainbow down the walls, then on the paintings, then on her hand .. and, looking at the resulting colors, she muttered thoughtfully:
- Here I am purple.. blue.. now white, yellow, red and black - I am all the earthly races put together on one hand, why the… hell are they going crazy for such foolishness? It's just a refraction of light, nothing more.
On that day, instagram was colored with the same black squares BLM and then we decided to paint our rainbow in a black square, a black rainbow as in the old song by St.Vincent:
There's a black rainbow above my house
Match the curtains and the floor
I think I'm glass I think I'm breaking it
Wrecking ball outside the door
« Pictures are bits of life - you don’t know what happened before, nor what would happen next. You can only see “the now” - a moment frozen in time, as if caught in amber. »
Evgeniy Monahov is a passionate Russian painter whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and collections in the US, Spain, Russia and China. He sees his style as sitting at the intersection of realism and impressionism, and focuses on representing the pure beauty of small details: shadows on hair in sunlight, the glow in a person's eyes, the silvery light of morning. Monahov values the incompleteness and imperfection of impressionism; the hint of a masterpiece, the expectation of a miracle.
