About this artwork
Happiness and marriage are represented through the red “囍” character, symbolising both people in the union and their future together. The custom of posting “囍” character on the wedded couple's door congratulates the new happy marriage, and wishes good fortune and wealth.
On the one hand the door and lock symbolises keeping the couple safe, the marriage intact and union long lasting as the strength of the marriage grows over time. On the other hand… the lock also represents traditional Chinese marriage customs of enforcing limited freedom and space, keeping the couples in the marriage and operating under strict rules and responsibilities. This includes at times married under pre-arranged circumstances.
These three elemental compositions of “囍”, “door” and “lock” wraps the various conflicting dimensions of marital meaning and relationships in one.
