About this artwork
At the centre of this work is a proud black woman with a determined gaze beyond the frame. Her grace comes from the rich spectrum of experiences of severe suffering and struggles between black and white thought and fronts that she seems to have overcome. Her skin is adorned with a series of different faces that seem to move up and down in this overall composition in the fight for their right to exist. Something that also symbolises the past of her…
ancestors. But all of that is behind her. She is strong today and looks straight ahead to new shores, outside of a fixed frame.
