About this artwork
Fintan Whelan’s practice is rooted in an intuitive and experimental approach to painting, driven by a sustained exploration of colour, movement, and material transformation. His work emerges through an almost alchemical process in which pigments, oils, and mixed media are layered, dissolved, and reworked, allowing chance and spontaneity to play an active role. This raw, process-led methodology reflects his belief that painting is not merely an act…
of representation, but a lived, physical experience unfolding on the canvas.
Colour performs a central role in Fintan’s work, engaging in what can be described as a kaleidoscopic dance across the surface. Fluid forms and shifting tonal relationships mirror the non-linear nature of thought and consciousness, creating compositions that feel both suspended and in motion. Light and texture operate as key structural elements: smooth passages are interrupted by dense, layered areas, generating tension and depth while inviting close, contemplative

« My abstract pieces form their own universe. »
Fintan Whelan is an Irish painter based in Germany, whose works have been exhibited throughout Ireland, the UK and Germany. Intrigued by the challenges of creating art, he seeks to capture resonances between the dynamic details of light and texture, and composes abstract pieces that evoke a plethora of varied emotional responses. Whelan harnesses the visual imagery of his memory to form the essence of his canvases, and undertakes a closely engaged technical process in which constant examination, measurement and reconfiguration push each work forward.
