About this artwork
This work (like all those in the V series) is a visual poem painted using abstract signs drawn from the vocabulary of improvisation. During the execution of the painting, the gesture refers back to origins, when painting and writing were one. This approach aims to abstract from acquired knowledge. The viewer is invited to follow the resulting lines and to question what truly matters to them.
François Brillat, a painter trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, explores acrylic on linen canvas and adds a rich multimedia experience to his career. He creates an alphabet of abstract, improvised and essential signs, inspired by an era when painting and writing merged. Her non-figurative technique creates visual poems, inviting each viewer to interpret lines that oscillate between vital fluids and reveries. Her works vibrate with a profound quest for introspection and generate a sense of ambiguity conducive to reflection on the essence of existence.
In September 2025, François Brillat self-published a catalogue raisonné of his work from recent years. In addition to numerous color reproductions, it includes working notes, reflections on painting, and reading notes. This catalogue is available for purchase by contacting the author directly, at the bookstore of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, or at the Artcurial art bookstore in Paris.
