About this artwork
High relief representing the handing over of the body of Christ to his mother after the Descent from the Cross, a pieta. Unlike traditional pieta, the mother is standing, the force of despair allows her to carry her son as she carried him 33 years ago. The mother is strong; she protects her child even in death. The free space on his left side refers to the tearing of his heart, now it is the void that inhabits him. Yet Marie still believes she knows…
that it is only the body of her son that she is holding, turning her head to the right she is waiting and believes in the resurrection.
