About this artwork
This artwork involves a herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle grazing at Cogden along the famous Chesil Beach in Dorset. Hatch makes a good many visits to this site at various times of day and seasons: this is a still dusk with the moon shining over the sea. The sturdy, docile cattle dissolve into the wind- shaped, darkening bramble bushes. They become indistinct the nearer they get to the sea. Frances Hatch is a British Landscape painter, based in West Dorset. She was raised in the East Anglian Fens - with its abundance of black soil, wide skies and biting east winds. The landscape of her childhood prompted her to try to communicate her response through painting on the spot - whilst in the presence of something happening. It might be an event like a fleeting effect of light bouncing off water. To this day, her connection with plein air landscape experience remains paramount.
