About this artwork
Coming Home forms part of the ongoing hiraeth series, exploring the emotional pull of place, memory, and return. The painting is based on a sunset seen while travelling from Worcester to Ledbury, a familiar journey where the landscape becomes tied to a sense of routine and belonging.
The light is central to the work, stretching across the land as the day begins to close. There is a quiet sense of transition, where movement through the landscape meets… a feeling of arrival.
As with the wider series, the painting moves beyond a direct depiction of place, instead holding onto the atmosphere of the moment. It reflects the subtle shift between distance and familiarity, where travelling through a landscape can also feel like returning to it.

Francesca Currie is a classically trained oil painter based in the UK, with a background rooted in the sight-size method and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, furthered at LARA. She blends Old Master traditions with expressive, contemporary techniques—her alla prima method and bold use of light imbue landscapes with both lively immediacy and subtle atmosphere. Her works evoke a sense of calm, optimism, and wonder, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find beauty and resonance in fleeting moments of the natural world.
