This work explores anatypy – a process I developed using photography as medium rather than tool. The term comes from Greek ana- (again) and typos (impression): "re-impression."
I begin with original medium format negatives that undergo a hybrid analog-digital transformation. Through a proprietary transfer process, images are re-impressed onto virgin photographic film, creating unpredictable distortions within the emulsion itself. Each negative becomes… a unique physical artifact where control and chaos collaborate.
The results evoke corrupted memories and fragmenting identity – faces suspended between recognition and dissolution. These prints preserve the texture and analog soul of one-of-a-kind source negatives that cannot be replicated.
Francesco Pavia, a conceptual and digital artist, uses medium format photography and mixed media, coming from a philosophy and documentary photography background. His style merges realism and abstraction, highlighting the paradox of photography as both an index and transfiguration of reality. Through seemingly indecisive imagery, he evokes emotions of ambiguity and the exploration of obscured truth.
