The idea of an arboreal cosmos was highly developed by the peoples of the Sierra Nevada, who are famous for their complex cosmological considerations. The universe, say the Kogi, is a tree, which they call Kalbusankua. Its trunk supports and gives unity to the existing; its branches are an expression of the diversity of living forms; its vertical and centrifugal growth is a manifestation of the movement of life.
