About this artwork
Mythological conceptual painting featuring Phaedra and Hippolytus. Phaedra is surrounded by her entourage of maidservants and gazes upon a small bubble encapsulating Hippolytus on the lower right. The canvas features many "bubbles" with micro-images alluding to the post-industrial landscape. It was more of an experimental piece as it started out being my most ambitious encaustic painting, which took nearly three months to complete. However, after… a couple of years I decided to add a conceptual "layering" over the image with spiral motifs.

Francisco Benitez is an American artist whose realist portraits are inspired by classical art and Baroque painting. Growing up between New York, New Mexico, and Spain, Benitez was exposed to a variety of cultures, his mother being a flamenco dancer, and his father, a Spanish set designer. His work has been exhibited throughout the USA and Europe, such as at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain de Nice, the Real Jardin Botànico in Madrid, and in the private collection of Jean-Paul Gaultier.
