About this artwork
The largest pastel I have created, which took almost two months to complete. It represents the young daughter of an Italian friend, who represents future generations and they face and climate and viral challenges of the future. She stands as a queen in a red dress, representing the Western impulse to harness and tap into the resources of the world, with the now resulting melting of icebergs. She is both a tragic figure, and a figure of hope. A world… of civilization confronted with the beauty and mercilessness of our natural world.
The piece is currently being framed with high-quality plexiglass.
Francisco Benitez is an American artist whose realist portraits are inspired by classical art and Baroque painting. Growing up between New York, New Mexico, and Spain, Benitez was exposed to a variety of cultures, his mother being a flamenco dancer, and his father, a Spanish set designer. His work has been exhibited throughout the USA and Europe, such as at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain de Nice, the Real Jardin Botànico in Madrid, and in the private collection of Jean-Paul Gaultier.
