The Venus of Rokeby is used as a reference to the close association between violence and sexuality although the artist has added humour he has portrayed the work through the story about suffragette Mary Richardson who attacked the painting with a meat cleaver in 1914 in annoyance at Mary Pankhurst being arrested, she also said 38 years on that she didn't like " the way men visitors gaped at it all day long ".
