About this artwork
Color as a fait accompli.
Fred Michiels's latest paintings express themselves in a precise language of color, form, and space, with unhindered clarity, in the first person.
The work is generous in its hopeful clarity.
Yet these paintings find a certain restraint in the consistency of the palette and in the way the colors blend together only through a layered optical structure. This suggests a kind of collage process.
So there are… many paintings left under the work.
I don't know if this is Michiels' intention, but in his recent works I often find elements of still life or landscape imbued with the gravity of color.
He himself speaks of "slow fragments of a radically topical daily life."
The poster magazine "Temporarily Useful Zones" is devoting five issues to the new works of Fred Michiels.
