About this artwork
A plunge by Parhelion into the hidden world. This work draws heavily upon deep racial memories and the spiritual heritage of Mankind. To bring it forth Parhelion had to plumb the depths of the inner consciousness for symbols and sigils that arise there as from a well. This involved a long period of subconscious contemplation after the background was completed. The base is mingled Mars Black pigment, invoking the Roman God Mars's authority over spirits… and the underworld, and Bone Black pigment - for obvious connotations! The final creation, with the bone white lines producing an effect like a being leaping forth from an alchemical/spirit pot surrounding by associated mystic symbols, was purely subconscious rendering from Parhelion's mind, like the rest of his work. Nevertheless, it was a revelation to the artist as well.
« I aim to directly communicate symbolism to the viewer, bypassing preconceived notions and striking to the heart of the relationship between viewer and artwork, observer and observed. »
Fred Phillips, also known as Parhelion, is a painter based in Barbados whose works highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message. He views life as vibrant, filled with riotous energy that is in constant motion, which he embodies in his works through the use of raw colors. For Phillips, a spontaneous demonstration of creativity is the very antithesis of despair. His abstract expressionist works are created using acrylics on canvas.
