About this artwork
This work is an abstract representation of the Hermetic ram-horned skyfather God, a syncretic deity combining attributes of Zeus (the Greek father of Gods and Men) and Amun, The Hidden One (the ancient Egyptian creator God nonpareil). It grew out of Parhelion's affinity for classical mythology. Traditional associations for this Lord of the Air include the overarching sky; wind, clouds, and lightning; royalty and manifestation; and wealth, prosperity,… beneficence, and good fortune. Acrylic paint is used to represent the patterned sweeps and surges of air and clouds against the background of sky-blue, and to form patterns in purple and crimson (crimson being the ancient Roman Imperial "Purple"), the colours associated with the royal Skyfather. The quick-drying immediacy of acrylic paint very much assisted Parhelion in creating the sense of burgeoning power, urgency, and activity one thinks of in connection with this archetype. He hopes the work conveys these concepts to the viewer.
« I aim to directly communicate symbolism to the viewer, bypassing preconceived notions and striking to the heart of the relationship between viewer and artwork, observer and observed. »
Fred Phillips, also known as Parhelion, is a painter based in Barbados whose works highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message. He views life as vibrant, filled with riotous energy that is in constant motion, which he embodies in his works through the use of raw colors. For Phillips, a spontaneous demonstration of creativity is the very antithesis of despair. His abstract expressionist works are created using acrylics on canvas.
