About this artwork
The Essential
Inspired by Sean Scully, Bernard Aubertin and Leonard Cohen
The works in my cycle "THE ESSENTIAL" are applied layer by layer to the canvas using an acrylic/sand mixture. Just as an archaeologist removes the layers of the past, I apply the layers to the canvas. Shiny gold represents the past, looted art, colonialism, and exploitation. The following layers of acrylic/sand represent the present and future. Sand is a symbol of transience,… impermanence, and uncertainty. Those who build on sand are relying on something very uncertain and are falling victim to deception. The hourglass reminds the dreamer that time is running out. These layers of paint express the intense emotions I experience when dealing with this subject.
« My work on canvas should arouse feelings in the viewer. Then my work has achieved its goal. »
