About this artwork
Casco Bay No. 1, is the first in a series exploring the intersection of water, light, and land off the coastline of Portland, ME.
This painting sets out to capture the fragmented, ever-shifting quality of coastal light as it plays across the waters and rocky outcroppings of Casco Bay. The composition breaks apart the traditional landscape into geometric segments - irregular windows that frame different moments of perception, as if viewing the scene… through memory alone. Oil on wood panel.
Gabe Davis (b. 1978) is a New England-based painter exploring abstract and landscape observations across both East and West coasts. Raised in Florida and Maine, he studied at MassArt in Boston and in Southern California, where the distinctive light and color palette continue to inform his paintings.
Working primarily in oil and acrylic on large surfaces, with smaller pieces in gouache and ink, Davis employs a discovery-driven approach that leaves room for expressive journeys across his canvases. His paintings blend landscape elements through layers and abstraction, capturing spaces both past and present.
His work evokes the awe and humility experienced in nature's vast presence, inviting viewers into moments of perspective and contemplation.
