About this artwork
In Summer Camouflage, summer is more than a season—it is a state of grace, a suspended moment where nature spills over in all its exuberance, and the human figure melts into it, becoming something else. The face, painted in a lush green like a childhood mask forgotten in a garden, becomes a space of metamorphosis, of sincere play with the self and the world.
The oversized crown of flowers encircling the head is a dreamlike headdress—a delirium of… colors and scents—where innocent joy mingles with the quiet nostalgia of summers gone by. A chameleon, perched lightly on a branch, observes with ironic detachment: a living metaphor for adaptation—or perhaps for the hope that beauty need not be explained, only worn.
Though part of the Melancholia project, this work radiates a sunlit kind of longing: a yearning for an endless summer, for a childlike freedom where joy is allowed to be honest, and beauty becomes a tender form of survival.
Matei, a painter and conceptual visual artist from Romania, delves into the human experience. He intriguingly blends photorealism with neorealism, creating hyper-detailed and introspective figures in oil paint. His work provocatively explores the past, present, and future, casting light on humanity's ever-evolving challenges and possibilities.
