United States
George Katich is a versatile, self-taught and professionally trained artist from Follansbee, WV, known for his portraits of athletes, depictions of Ohio River steel mills, and mixed media works inspired by his upbringing and the industrial heritage of the region.
Katich grew up near Pittsburgh along the Ohio River, surrounded by street mills. His father, brother, uncles and grandfathers worked in the mills, and he recalls living in Coketown, a now-defunct housing area owned by Wheeling Steel. He developed a passion early, sketching athletes from his father's Sports Illustrated magazines.
Katich graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he trained in multiple mediums. A pivotal moment came in 1966 when he brought art to the Pittsburgh Steelers ticket office: it was noticed by Dan Rooney, who later became team owner, leading to commissions for Steelers players. This opened the door to a decades-long career creating portraits for athletes across the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA.
