About this artwork
"Up" is a painting in which the character represented is very similar to classical sculpture, in an imitation of white marble, with white statue eyes and a very little damaged mineral material. Rather rare, there is only one square on this work, placed at the level of the heart. We can have the symbol of grief, sorrow, lack or mourning, and the fact that the character is looking towards the sky (a starry sky quite surreal if we consider that it is… a statue that is looking at him) reinforces the impression of spiritual or metaphysical pain: is the soul of those who leave us up there?
This painting is a unique piece made in mixed technique on canvas and combines photography, digital composition and acrylic painting (many layers of transparent glaze and raised square). The painting is framed in black wood (total dimensions: approximately 66 x 66 cm)
« In the age of digital technologies, I couldn't just be a painter or a photographer. My 'paintographies' destroy borders and offer a resolutely contemporary hybrid art. »
Georges Dumas's artistic approach is both simple and complex. While the aesthetic of his works, which he describes as "paintographies," is highly figurative, their composition is slow and complex, blending photography, digital art, and acrylic paint. Georges Dumas transforms the models he photographs into virtual sculptures by replacing their skin with mineral materials to represent both the passage of time and the fragility of the body.
