About this artwork
There are thought to be about 375 species of humming bird and most of these are found in Central and Southern America.
I have shown ruby-throated hummingbirds in this composition. Their wings beat at 53 times per second and it is this that produces the humming sound. This enables them to hover, fly backwards and even upside-down. They are the smallest and fastest of warm blooded creatures on earth. They feed from the nectar of flowers and the salvia… with its tubular shaped blooms is a favourite.
