About this artwork
I have combined several images in order to create this composition of the annual migration of wildebeest across the Serengeti-Mara. The migration follows the seasonal pattern of rainfall and is driven by a never ending search for fresh grazing and water. One of the most treacherous stretches of this migratIon is crossing the crocodile infested Mara river in Kenya which is the setting for this painting.
Gerald Miles, a retired engineer and technical illustrator, creates evocative paintings using watercolour, pastels, oils, and acrylics. Favouring realistic styles with visible brushwork, he prepares textured surfaces with acrylic modelling paste, employing dry brush techniques and a limited palette to achieve harmony and dynamic rhythm. His artworks, often inspired by his lifelong passion for nature and his sport diving experiences, vividly capture landscapes, active animals, and underwater scenes, radiating a profound sense of atmosphere and reverence for the natural world.
