About this artwork
The Fantastic Eye. Kyoto. Head of a Niō statue, the fearsome guardians of Buddhist temples. A guardian deity with a menacing gaze whose role is to protect Buddhism. This one, located to the right of the temple gate, has its mouth open to emit the sacred sound "Ah," considered in Buddhism to be the lifeblood of all things. While the gaze and the open, toothy mouth may seem terrifying to a Westerner, it is revered in Asia as a protector.
