About this artwork
AWARD WINNING WORK
Gerda takes us to the threshold of individual consciousness and her relationship with the environment. Epiphany testifies to the instant when the self is recognized for the first time, in contrast with the crowd. The staircase becomes a symbol of transit, ascent and revelation, but also of uncertainty. Her work captures a moment of transformation that, though deeply personal, resonates as a universal metaphor: the discovery of… identity in a constantly moving world. The hypnotic image she builds functions as a crossroads between destiny and memory, a space where the symbolic and the real intertwine in an enigmatic narrative.
Hung in a stairwell, this work can give a full house cachet. Designed to hang freely (without frame) from a wooden bar (painted black), which will be delivered with the work. It has been internationally exhibited (Granada, Berlin) and received a special mention of the jury and the Audience Award in the Nivelles art prize.
Gerda Van Damme's emotionally charged works—often in monochrome—have earned her finalist spots in prestigious competitions such as the Arte Laguna Prize (Venice), the Biennale Pierre Paulus, and the Prix des Arts Plastiques et Visuels du Waux-hall (Audience Award). Exhibiting across Europe and the US, including Berlin, Brooklyn, Ostend, and the Arsenale of Venice, she blends cinematic storytelling with existential inquiry. Van Damme’s practice is supported by multiple grants from cultural institutions in Belgium, affirming her role as a vital voice in visual arts.
