About this artwork
What we see is a metaphorical battle between two sparrows on a tower of books on a globe. The scene is surrounded by rare and common birds. A masked cat has also sneaked in. The limitations of one's own knowledge is the theme of this ink drawing.
The image is rich in symbolism and opens up many possibilities for interpretation. It is an allegorical scene—a kind of parable or metaphor for social and philosophical themes.
The globe with the books… stands for knowledge as a foundation of our understanding of the world after the “Enlightenment” - Enlightenment in the philosophical sense. The globe shows the world as a stage for events and humanity as a whole. The Books as Symbols of knowledge, education, history and culture. Our understanding of the world is built on knowledge. The two sparrows fighting as an image of blind, senseless and tragic conflict – a symbol of strife without true understanding.
