About this artwork
In this oil painting I have painstakingly captured a vintage children's dress, with which I want to evoke the softness and innocence of childhood. But this work mainly appeals to the temporary nature of identity. We also derive who we are from who we were: we identify with 'our memories' and the feeling that this evokes. The subtle shadows and textural details bring the garment to life, as if you can almost touch it. This work radiates a timeless… elegance and brings a sense of nostalgia and serenity to any room where it hangs.
Gerty Vos harnesses oil and tempera on canvas, with a respect for traditional methods and an artistic lineage tracing back to Dutch masters. Her paintings merge meticulous realism with a luminous emphasis on material textures, invoking a rebirth of classical techniques. Through stark contrasts and a dance of light and shadow, she elicits a feeling of warm sunlight embracing the viewer, exploring profound themes of identity and perception.
