About this artwork
Antigua is renowned world-wide for its excellent sailing conditions - in particular its safe anchorages (the Caribbean is subject to highly destructive hurricanes), in particular, English Harbour. This was really another excuse to paint palm trees, another one of my favourite subjects, introducing an element of mystery: the boats are not immediately apparent & are all in a modest white so as not to detract from the wonders of nature enshrined in…
the magnificent towering trees. As well as being very attractive - at least to me they are - they are also amazingly flexible, bending almost to the ground in the very high winds that can sweep the region. I also included a flash of a setting sun - sunsets can be spectacular in these parts.

Gilly Gobinet is an award-winning artist based in Antigua & Barbuda whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in St. Lucia, Anguilla, Venezuela, and France.
