About this artwork
As the rain clears this evening, I am reminded how bright the city is the morning after a storm. In my new gouache and monotype on paper “On Broadway, Wired for Sound – Tower Theatre”, we find ourselves in DTLA as the morning light graces Our City of Angels. We keep pace behind a woman set for her day. Coffee in hand, a Strand Books bag slung over her shoulder, and a purposeful stride. Most of us as we traverse the city are Bluetooth connected. The… soundtrack of our lives on an infinite loop. Across the street, the historic Tower Theatre beckons. Designed in 1927 by movie theater architect S. Charles Lee, the Tower Theatre was the first film palace wired for sound as talkies overtook the silent film era. Today, the pace of change continues as the venerable building’s new tenant is an Apple store.
Inspired by my own L.A. stories, I am working on a series of paintings inspired by this wonderfully diverse and sprawling city.
