About this artwork
Whenever I go to New York, I visit the Met Museum of Art. I had been studying Joseph Campbell's work on comparative mythology and how it relates to psychology. He uses images and archaeological artifacts as examples of how these myths were portrayed in the ancient world. I've wanted to bring these images into our contemporary world, because even though many of these ancient myths are no longer in practice today, we are still just as human, all too…
human. As I found myself on another visit to the Met, specifically in the pre-Columbian gallery. It was then that I paid attention not only to the pieces themselves, but also to the display case where they were displayed, to the relationship between the pieces and the space they inhabited. At that moment I remembered Francis Bacon's paintings and an exhibition of his that I at Tate Liverpool called Invisible Rooms, because in his paintings, he places the figures as if they inhabited mental, imaginary spaces, almost like invisible rooms.
