About this artwork
In the early modern period it was said that if you looked through your legs, upside down, you could see the devil. The model is looking past her legs. She doesn't seem particularly keen on seeing the devil's face. She shows the viewer her shame openly and without hesitation. If the devil is one of these, then he (and here he is reminded of the depiction of Sheela-na-gig) can possibly be driven away by this sight. However, the viewers (let's hope…
they aren't devils) are exposed here as voyeurs. How to deal with that is entirely up to them. The work is a provocation, but Gunter Langer leaves it open to whom it is aimed.

Gunter Langer is an experienced painter, draftsman, and sculptor based in Germany whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in China, the United States, and Italy. He describes his artistic practice as being based on the "organizaton of expressiveness". For example, in the motif of the model, Langer observes current events and develops themes from them, which he combines with topics from art history, etc.
