I have always been fascinated by sketching as an artistic tool, as a reflective communication with oneself, one's own work and the work of others – quick, provisional, spontaneous, unfinished, more questioning than answering.
When I began working on the Battle series, I developed numerous, diverse pictorial figures to find a compelling yet… repetitive visualization of war and violence. From these diverse "sketches," the series "On Painting" evolved—large, autonomous "sketches" presented as paintings.
