About this artwork
In this piece, I poured intense emotion into every bold stroke of oil paint. The vivid blue surrounds deep, textured black shapes touched with flickers of red, evoking a powerful contrast of calm and turmoil. It invites you to feel the clash of energy and tranquility, bringing a dynamic yet meditative presence that will ignite passion and contemplation in any space it inhabits.
My process is intuitive and physical. I work with layers, scratches,… overpainting and the partial destruction of earlier stages. This results in a image that is not only about what is visible, but also what remains hidden beneath the surface. The forms in the work are not intended as recognizable figures, but as fragments of presence as if something or someone briefly appears and then disappears again. For me, the painting is about traces; traces of movement, of time, of a inner state.
Hans Cordfunke is a painter whose academic background in art history, paired with his autodidactic approach, lays a rich foundation for his exploration of classical oil on linen. He defies tradition with raw, textural techniques—using rollers, cardboard, and spatulas—to create instinctive, layered abstractions, balancing tradition and innovation. His work is saturated with urgent existential questions, inviting viewers into self-reflection, connection, and a visceral experience of energy, vulnerability, and the inexorable passage of time. Every canvas reverberates with positive energy and introspective wonder, urging a profound emotional engagement from the viewer.
