About this artwork
The illuminated face is not a real face, but a mask of fragments, an armor of thick paint attempting to maintain a semblance of humanity. However, the darkness that devours half the head suggests that a part of the self has already surrendered to the void. That black stain extending to the left is not merely a projected shadow; it is the "dark double" or the trauma that walks with the subject, a parasitic presence awaiting the moment when the light… of the yellow background (consciousness) fades to consume what remains of the form. The completely empty black eye functions as a tunnel into absolute nothingness, eliminating any trace of humanity in the gaze.
« I am a dark painter and a lively, lucid, and conscious dreamer. I always see a little further. »
Hanzo Barcelona is an award-winning artist based in Spain whose paintings have been exhibited nationally. The central theme in his works is the deconstruction of dreams and experiences reflected in people, moments, and situations. Hanzo describes his artistic practice as being marked by the search for form, the expression of feelings, and an
"ever-present synesthesia". His distinctive abstractions are created using acrylics on canvas.
