"Whirlwind" is part of a series called "The 10,000 Things / Read the signs" which aims at depicting the process of reading the sacred signs in the skies (of ancient China) by the most advanced Daoist priests in order to help the people/the state in crisis.
The ten thousand things have ten thousand different forms, but in the final analysis they are one. How did they become one? Because of nonbeing. Through nonbeing one reaches oneness.
(Commentary… of Wang Pi on Laozi 42; transl. by Ariane Rump/Wing-tsit Chan)
The Dao generates Oneness.
Oneness generates Twoness.
Twoness generates Threeness.
Threeness generates the ten thousand things.
(Laozi 42; transl. by H.-G. Moeller)
